Why the Flipped Classroom Model is a Game-Changer for Learning

With rapid technological change (especially in AI), enterprises need flexible, scalable, and outcome-based solutions to upskill their employees. The traditional training approach, where a subject matter expert delivers information and learners passively absorb it, often falls short. The flipped classroom model offers a powerful alternative, reversing the flow of information to prioritize hands-on application and skill development.

What is a Flipped Classroom?

A flipped classroom reverses the traditional model of teaching by dividing the learning process into two distinct parts.

First, participants encounter new material on their own through online resources like videos or readings. This self-paced portion of the training provides the foundational knowledge needed for the next step.

Second, the live classroom time is used for interactive learning activities with an instructor's guidance. This is where learners combine the theoretical with the practical through discussions, labs, projects, and problem-solving tasks. By shifting the initial discovery of basic skills to an asynchronous online format, the instructor's time can then be used for deeper engagement and practical application of knowledge.

This blend of asynchronous and synchronous learning maximizes hands-on time and ensures comprehensive skill development.

The Flipped Learning Journey Example

Our unique approach allows companies to drive change at every level of the organization through a rich, multimodal experience (video, text, projects, live instruction).

We share learner data, including project outcomes, skills post-assessments, and certifications earned.

This model can be structured as a "skills supply chain", moving learners from foundational concepts to expert-level application

Before training starts, learners take a skills assessment to see what courses they will need as a foundation, then move to Phase 1 based on their skills gaps. For example, those who don't need the introductory courses can go right to the live training.

Phase 1: Foundational Knowledge. This phase focuses on self-paced, asynchronous learning. Learners can enroll in specialized courses to gain foundational knowledge and build a portfolio of new skills. These programs are accessible anytime, anywhere.

Phase 2: Live, Hands-on Application. Once the basics are established, learners move on to live, instructor-led sessions, either online, in-person, or hybrid, customized to your schedule and staff-location specifications. These workshops are designed to enhance prior self-study through practical application. A significant portion of this time is dedicated to hands-on labs and exercises. These sessions culminate in a real-world capstone project where participants build a comprehensive solution. This project serves as a tangible demonstration of acquired skills and direct business value.

Phase 3: Formal Validation. The final stage of this journey can include preparation for vendor-authorized certifications, providing learners with formal, industry-recognized credentials to validate their expertise.

For support throughout, we can create a Slack/Teams channel for Q&A with our instructors and assistants.

At the conclusion of the program, Ascendient Learning shares the program outcomes and learner data with the client, demonstrating outcome-based learning. This structure ensures a seamless flow from theoretical understanding to practical mastery, helping to make learning stick and close skill gaps across organizations.
