Challenge

A leading financial institution identified a critical need to significantly enhance the Generative AI capabilities of their engineering teams. Facing a scarcity of available talent in the market, our client opted for an internal upskilling initiative, training existing data scientists to become machine learning engineers. The emphasis was on practical application, as the graduating machine learning engineers would be the most experienced in the company.

Methodology

To address our client's specific needs, a customized "Generative AI Engineering" upskilling program was designed and implemented. The program incorporated a five-day intensive upskill period for each cohort, featuring interspersions of hands-on, immersive project work from day one.

This approach ensured immediate practical application of learned concepts. Pre- and post-assessments were consistently used to measure learning gain and calculate the return on investment for the client. Continuous feedback loops were integrated to refine the program iteratively.

Solution

The customized Generative AI Engineering program provided a comprehensive curriculum covering foundational Generative AI concepts, prompt engineering, Large Language Models (LLMs) for enhancing software development processes, and Generative AI applications with LangChain. Key aspects of the solution included:

  • Customized Curriculum: Tailored content focusing on practical applications relevant to the financial institution's business.
  • Intensive Upskilling: Five-day immersive sessions with practical exercises and project work from the outset.
  • Real-World Application: Participants built functional business chatbots leveraging cutting-edge Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques like Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG).
  • Industry-Specific Projects: Capstone projects were designed to address specific use cases within the finance industry, directly supported by the institution, including chatbots.
  • MVP Focus: Participants were required to produce a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) by the end of the week, emphasizing practical application and production capabilities.

Outcomes

The Generative AI Engineering Training Program yielded significant and measurable improvements for the leading financial institution:

  • Participant Reach: The program successfully upskilled 75 participants across five cohorts.
  • Significant Learning Gain: A substantial increase in knowledge was observed across cohorts, with an average learning gain of 52% across all cohorts and 75 students
  • High Capstone Project Proficiency: All participants successfully built LLM-based applications with functional demonstrations.
  • Immediate Project Implementation: At least two of the capstone projects were directly put into immediate production within the institution, with two more under consideration, demonstrating the direct applicability and value of the training.
  • Successful Project Examples: Successful projects included AI-driven insurance chatbots, HR bots (candidate screening, Q&A about the institution, interview prep), regulatory document processing tools, and agentic research tools.
  • Enhanced Self-Assessed Skills: Participants' self-rated knowledge of course topics significantly increased, with an average score rising from 3.5 to 4.3 (on a 1-5 scale) across all cohorts.

"The instructor was very knowledgeable on both the theoretical aspects of GenAI models as well as using the popular frameworks for developing practical solutions. It was great that they were able to reference academic papers whenever a question was brought up or new ideas were introduced. The instructor also had great insight into things that can go wrong and how to approach problems when working with LLMs."
