AWS Cloud Engineering Program with Blended Curriculum [Case Study]

Challenge

Our long-time client, A fortune 500 consulting firm, sought a comprehensive upskilling program that went beyond foundational cloud training to prepare their employees for real-world cloud engineering roles. They needed a structured curriculum that blended official AWS training (ILT and Skill Builder) with in-house developed courses in complementary technologies like DevOps, CI/CD, and containerization. The primary goal was to ensure their employees were job-ready and could immediately contribute to cloud initiatives from day one.

Our Methodology

We designed and delivered a five-week AWS Cloud Engineering program that provided a holistic understanding of cloud operations and related technologies. Our approach allowed us to address the client's unique needs, combining fundamental cloud knowledge with practical, hands-on skills in DevOps, CI/CD, and containerization.

The Solution

The training program was hands-on and culminated in a capstone project

This program is a testament to our expertise in creating customized training outcomes by blending official vendor-authorized content, like AWS Skill Builder, with our own expert-led courses on related technologies. The curriculum provided a comprehensive and practical skill set:

  • Week 1: The program began with an overview and technical check, followed by DevOps fundamentals, Git & Git Flows, and an introduction to Python and build tools. Learners explored CI/CD pipelines with GitHub Actions, participated in hands-on demos, and completed the DevOps Scavenger Hunt to reinforce concepts.
  • Week 2: The focus shifted to CloudOps on AWS and AWS Skill Builder modules covering core AWS services. Participants joined optional AWS Cloud Practitioner Exam (CPE) test prep sessions, deepened their GitHub Actions and microservices integration skills, and completed the AWS Phase 1 Test to validate progress.
  • Week 3: Learners advanced to microservices and cloud-native development, identifying AWS architectures, applying the 12-Factor App methodology, building Python Flask REST APIs, implementing advanced GitHub scripting, and practicing automated testing, deployment strategies, and vulnerability scanning before taking the AWS Phase 2 Test
  • Week 4: Training focused on containerization and Kubernetes, starting with Docker and Docker Compose fundamentals, progressing to Kubernetes architecture and deployments. Learners completed hands-on labs, including Docker/Docker Compose, Kubernetes Deployments, and Kubernetes Ingress, while continuing AWS Skill Builder integration.
  • Week 5: The program concluded with the Capstone Project, where learners built and deployed an end-to-end cloud-native solution integrating DevOps pipelines, Git, containerized workloads, and AWS services. Other activities included identifying Kubernetes architecture components (learning gamification), completing a mock quiz, and delivering final team presentations for peer and instructor feedback.

The Outcome

This program provided a holistic training experience that exceeded the goal of simply preparing students for a single AWS certification. The blend of official AWS content and our expert-led in-house courses taught learners the practical, job-ready skills needed to succeed as cloud engineers.

Each student collaborated in a team to complete a capstone project, applying and validating the skills gained throughout the program.

The program delivered measurable results, including:

  • Significant Knowledge Gain: The average score on the preliminary knowledge assessment was 48.75%, which increased to 71.67% on the final assessment. This resulted in an average learning gain of 47.02%. The top performers in the program achieved an impressive 350% increase in their knowledge assessment score.
  • Increased Skill Confidence: Before the training, participants rated their skills and knowledge at an average of 2.4 out of 5, which jumped to 4.0 out of 5 after completing the program.
  • High Satisfaction Scores: The course material was rated highly, with an average score of 4.9 out of 5 for meeting objectives. The instructor received perfect scores (5 out of 5) for being knowledgeable, using real-world examples, and covering course objectives. Students were highly satisfied, giving the program a 4.6 out of 5
