Become a citizen developer with Claude Code through prompt-driven scripting, spec-driven development, and Git-backed iteration. This Claude course teaches knowledge workers how to direct Claude Code from Claude Desktop across languages and frameworks. The course covers Git-tracked workspace setup, spec-driven development, building lightweight web interfaces, automated testing, documentation, and secure deployment. Learners practice the software development life cycle end-to-end through worked examples in OpenSpec, Streamlit, and Python, while applying file-permission and API-key discipline throughout. Hands-on labs walk through real scenarios, including standing up a Claude Code workspace, developing a small internal tool, adding an interactive dashboard, and preparing a documented release a colleague can run. The course is designed for knowledge workers ready to direct Claude Code into a workflow that produces real, runnable code.

Module 1 - Setting Up the Secure Workspace

By the end of this module, you will be able to recognize the building blocks of a software project, set up a Git-tracked project folder where an AI coding agent can operate, and apply file-permission discipline so the agent’s review gate stays meaningful. You will also recognize the sandbox the agent applies to its own work.

  • Working with Claude Code and Claude Desktop
  • The terminal and file-system navigation
  • Code, libraries, and package managers
  • Project folders and Git repositories
  • Claude Code’s permission lists and approve-or-decline review gate
  • File-permission risks, execution risk, and usage cost discipline
  • Hands-on Lab: Set up a project folder for a new task, open Claude Code from Claude Desktop in that folder, and complete one approve-or-decline review on a low-risk file change.

Module 2 - Building Your First Tool

By the end of this module, you will be able to use spec-driven development to describe a task, run a complete development cycle, commit progress with Git, and approve or refuse generated changes against the specification’s acceptance criteria.

  • Hands-on Lab: Propose an OpenSpec change for a manual workplace task, apply it with Claude Code to produce a working script, archive the change once accepted, and confirm the output matches the spec’s acceptance criteria.

Module 3 - Adding a User Interface

By the end of this module, you will be able to decide when a script should become an interactive interface, direct an AI coding agent to generate the components and visualizations you need, and run a local application server to preview the result before sharing it with anyone.

  • Hands-on Lab: Build a small interactive dashboard with Claude Code using Streamlit that visualizes one departmental dataset, then run it on the local application server.

Module 4 - Testing, Debugging, and Deploying

By the end of this module, you will be able to read a terminal error well enough to paste a productive question back to an AI coding agent, generate automated tests from a specification, document the tool with an AI-generated README, and choose a deployment path that protects API keys and company data.

  • Terminal error output: error type, stack trace, and failing line
  • Pasting errors back to Claude Code for troubleshooting
  • Prompting Claude Code to generate automated tests from a spec
  • Running automated tests in the iteration loop
  • Generating the README, usage notes, and inline comments
  • Secure deployment: API keys, credentials, and IT-sanctioned release paths
  • Hands-on Lab: Use Claude Code to add tests, fix a failing test, write the README, and produce a deployment plan for a small interactive app.
